Translation 1 Java is an island in Southeast Asia and a part of Indonesia. It has an area of approximately 126,000 square kilometers. This is an island with the highest population and is the location of the capital city as well as other large cities. Java used to be a part of the Hindu Empire, but nowadays the majority of the population are Muslim. Java has several active volcanoes. The hot and humid climate and rich soil make the island ideal for agriculture. |

Translation 2 (edited student presentation) Java is an island in southeast Asia and is a part of Indonesia. It has an area of about 126,000 square kilometers. It is the most heavily populated island and the capital as well as other big cities are situated on this island. Java was once a part of a Hindu empire but nowadays most people are Muslims. There are many active volcanoes on the island. Its tropical and humid climate and the rich soil make Java highly suitable for agriculture. |

เกาะชวาเป็นเกาะที่มีประชากรอาศัยอยู่มากที่สุด
Does this sentence mean that Java is the island with the greatest number of people living in it compared to any other island in the world? or within Indonesia? or within Southeast Asia?
Note that Thai usually includes a descriptive noun in front of the noun being used. For example, we say สีแดง สีขาว สีดำ สีทอง ประเทศไทย ประเทศจีน เกาะชวา เกาะบาหลี เกาะปีนัง. In English, however, we don't normally say red color, white color, black color, gold color, Thailand country, China country, or Java island, Bali island, Penang island. It would sound superfluous. It is perfectly natural to describe the pickup in the Test 2 news piece as "รถกระบะ ยี่ห้อโตโยต้า สีบรอนซ์," but it would be odd to say in English "a silver color Toyota brand pickup car." It is more natural to simply say "a silver Toyota pickup," without the classifying nouns.
Some of you seem to confuse the Thai descriptive nouns with "information units" in one of our rule of thumbs where you want to make sure that all the information units are there as you translate from one language to another. เกาะชวา in the following instances needn't be translated as Java island since there is no ambiguity that Java might be referring to something else like the language of Javanese or the computer language.
