It is said that Thai boxing is the most dangerous ring sport in the world, but those who have not seen it often laugh when they learn that boxers can weigh only 45 kilograms. No one knows for certain how or when Thai boxing developed. In the past, during a match, there would be no timekeeper, no rest between rounds, and no use of gloves. It was only in 1919 that gloves were introduced which considerably helped reduce fatality and injury rates. Thai boxing differs from most martial arts which only allow the use of fists and feet, but Thais believe that in fighting we can use any part of our body. In boxing camps in Thailand, most of which are in the Northeast, village youngsters may have their first competition at about eight years old. Some of these children have coaches who are usually former champions to take care of them. In some parts of the country, Thai boxing is a way for rural children to escape from poverty.
