Last time we learnt that Descartes’ argument for the essential distinction between mind and body is invalid. Descartes himself realized this because the invalidity was pointed out by some of his contemporaries. Nevertheless he was determined to amend the argument. He wrote his most famous work, Meditations, to put forward a much more complex argument. After proving the indutability of “I think, therefore I am”, he proceeded to prove the existence of God, and finally from this existence he argued that the mind and the body are distinct entities. (How did he do that we will find out in the end). So what we will do is to read, analyze, and evaluate Descartes’ argument for the existence of God.

Please be reminded that we are not interested in Descartes’ philosophy per se. Our aim is to look at a very important philosophical issue, “Are there any supernatural beings?” Considering the argument for the existence of God will provide an approach to answering this question.
