ตอนที่ 1
ชนิดต่าง ๆ ของประโยค

ประโยคแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ชนิด ดังนี้คือ

1. Simple sentence
ประโยค simple sentence คือประโยคที่มีโครงสร้างอย่างง่าย มี clause อิสระหรือ independent clause อันเดียว เช่น
The student is working hard.
She confessed her crime to the police.

2. Compound sentence
Compound sentence คือ ประโยคที่มีตั้งแต่สอง independent clauses (ซึ่งเป็น simple sentences) ขึ้นไป และแต่ละ clause แยกออกมาเขียนเป็น simple sentence ได้ ในประโยค compound sentence ไม่มี dependent clauses คำ conjunctions ที่ใช้เชื่อม ได้แก่ and, but, or, so, for
You may discuss this report with your colleagues first, but our CEO will finally finalize it.
The bus stopped at the bus terminal and all the passengers got out of it.

3. Complex sentence
Complex sentence คือประโยคที่มีเพียงหนึ่ง independent clause เท่านั้น แต่จะมี dependent clause หนึ่ง clause หรือมากกว่าหนึ่งก็ได้มาเป็นส่วนขยาย
You didn’t tell me that you were going to set up a new business.
ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้เป็น noun clause
The couple who lived in the big house at the corner used to be movie stars.
ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้เป็น relative clause ทำหน้าที่เป็น adjective clause ขยายคำ noun ‘the couple’
As soon as I realized that something had gone wrong, I called the police. (as soon as ใช้นำหน้า adverb clause of time)
This is the place where his brother was killed.
(where ใช้นำหน้า adverb clause of place)
She talked to him as if she were her mother.
(as if ใช้นำหน้า adverb clause of manner)
Alisa asked her parents to let her stay in her own flat because she wanted to be independent.
(because ใช้นำหน้า adverb clause of reason)
Although he had tried hard to investigate the case, he found little useful evidence.
(although ใช้นำหน้า adverb clause ที่บอก contrast)
Realizing that the political climate in the country was unfavourable, Mr. Johnson cancelled the plan to expand his business.
(ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้เรียกว่า participial phrase ลดรูปมาจาก clause เต็ม ๆ ว่า After Mr. Johnson realized that the political climate in the country was unfavourable อยู่ในรูป active voice)
Strongly criticized by her friends, she refused to join the team.
(ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้ก็เป็น participial phrase ด้วย ลดรูปมาจาก clause เต็มว่า When หรือ After she was strongly criticized by her friend. อยู่ในรูป passive voice)

4. Compound – complex sentence
Compound – complex sentence คือประโยคที่มีตั้งแต่สอง independent clauses
ขึ้นไป และมี dependent clauses ตั้งแต่หนึ่ง clause ขึ้นไป กล่าวง่าย ๆ คือมีทั้งประโยค compound และ complex ปนกันอยู่ เช่น
Since that article seems to satisfy your needs, we are enclosing a copy and we hope that it will help you find a suitable solution to your problem.

1. Subject
คือคำ หรือกลุ่มคำที่อาจเป็นบุคคล สิ่งของ สถานที่ หรือสภาวะทางนามธรรม ซึ่งเป็น
ผู้แสดงออกในประโยค ส่วนใหญ่ subjects ที่เป็นประเภทคำโดด (single words) มักจะเป็นคำประเภท nouns และ pronouns เสมอ เช่น
The Principal called the meeting at 2 o’clock.
He wanted every staff member to attend the meeting.
Verbals (คำคล้าย verbs) เช่น gerund และ infinitive ก็อาจเป็น subject ได้
Jogging is good exercise. (gerund)
To run is more tiring than to walk. (infinitive)
The demonstrative, interrogative และ indefinite pronouns เป็น subjects ได้
That is going to be a difficult task. (demonstrative)
What are your plans for doing it? (interrogative)
Everyone is ready to work with you. (indefinite)
Phrase ที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือน noun เป็น subject ของ sentence ได้
Winning the prize is the thing he is so proud of.
To make this report as comprehensive as possible is our main objective.
Dependent clause ทั้ง clause ก็ทำหน้าที่เป็น subject ได้
Whoever works in the headquarter will be able to supply the information you need.
Whether the report has been approved or not will determine our action.

2. Verb
Verb คือคำที่ใช้แสดงการกระทำของ subject (active verb) หรือการถูกกระทำ (passive verb) และอาจเป็นคำที่แสดงให้รู้จัก subject ซึ่งเรียกกันว่า linking verb ซึ่งไม่ใช่ลักษณะของ
การกระทำหรือการถูกกระทำแต่อย่างใดก็ได้ เช่น He appears happy. She looks cheerful. ในประโยคหนึ่ง ๆ จะมี verb เสมอ
เมื่อพูดถึง verb จะต้องนึกถึงตัวกำหนดรูปแบบของ verb 5 กรณีดังต่อไปนี้คือ
- พจน์ (number) - กาล (tense) - การก (voice)
- บุคคล (person)) - มาลา (mood)
ตัวกำหนดทั้ง 5 กรณีนี้จะส่งผลให้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงในรูปแบบของ verb ซึ่งอาจเปลี่ยนที่รูปแบบของ verb หรือใช้ auxiliary verbs เหล่านี้ช่วย เช่น be, have, can, may, might, shall, will, should, would, could, must, do
Verbs เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามตัวกำหนดดังนี้

2.1 Number กำหนดให้ verb นั้นเป็น singular หรือ plural verb ก็จะต้องเปลี่ยนไปตามนั้น
2.2 Person กำหนดให้ verb เปลี่ยนไปตาม person 3 อย่างคือ บุรุษที่ 1 first person (I), บุรุษที่ 2 second person (you) หรือ บุรุษที่ 3 third person (he, it, they)
The technician completed the video recording yesterday. (active voice)
Fund-raising activities were organized to help the orphans. (passive voice)

3. Complement
Complement คือ คำหรือกลุ่มคำที่ตามหลังกริยา และทำให้ประโยคมีความหมายสมบูรณ์ complement อาจเป็น
3.1 กรรมตรง (Direct object)
He bought a beautiful present for his wife.
We are trying to find a solution to this problem.
3.2 กรรมรอง (Indirect object)
He gave a beautiful present to his wife.
He = subject และ predicate ก็คือ is running

Noun: He is chairman of the Board of Directors.
Pronoun: They thought the winner was he.
Gerund: My favorite exercise is doing aerobics.
Infinitive phrase: The purpose of this seminar is to find new ways and means to deal with our company’s productivity problem.
Noun Clause: The group leader should be whoever is best qualified.

3.4 Predicate adjective คือ adjective ที่เป็นภาค predicate ของประโยคและขยาย noun หรือ pronoun ที่เป็น subject
Predicate adjective จะต้องอยู่หลัง linking verb เสมอ
The flower smell sweet.
He seemed depressed after his wife’s death.
He appears enthusiastic about the subject.

The new employee has been assigned the difficult task of analyzing the statistical reports on income tax.
Somchai was very disappointed; he failed completely in that fierce competition.

4.2 Adverbs คือคำที่ใช้ขยาย verbs, verbals, adjectives หรือ adverbs อื่น ๆ หรืออีกนัยหนึ่ง adverbs คือคำที่ตอบคำถามคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย where, how, how much, when, why เช่น
We will organize the party here.
She walks very fast.
Spending money unwisely, he ran out of his allowance.
Submit your report as soon as it is completed.
She went downtown to buy a new piece of jewellery.

5. Connectives

Coordinate conjunctions Connectives ประเภทนี้ใช้มากที่สุด จะใช้เชื่อมส่วนของประโยคที่มีฐานะหรือความสำคัญเท่ากันทางไวยากรณ์ คือ words กับ words, phrases กับ phrases, independent clauses กับ independent clauses คำเหล่านี้ที่ใช้มาก ได้แก่ and, but, or, nor, for, yet
เช่น I go to school, but my sister stays at home.

Correlative conjunctions Connectives ประเภทนี้จะเป็นคำคู่ ใช้เชื่อมส่วนของประโยคที่มีฐานะเท่ากันเหมือน coordinate conjunctions แต่คำที่ใช้เป็นคู่นั้นจะต้องตามด้วยคำชนิดเดียวกัน ตัวอย่าง connectives ประเภทนี้ได้แก่ either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also, both…and
เช่น Either he leaves or I will.

Conjunctive adverbs
Conjunctive adverbs ที่ใช้มากคือ
therefore, however, consequently, accordingly, subsequently, furthermore, moreover, nevertheless
เช่น This task is very difficult; therefore, we need all of us to co-operate.

5.2 เชื่อมส่วนของประโยคที่มีฐานะไม่เท่ากัน
ได้แก่ subordinate conjunctions, relative pronouns, และ relative adverbs. connectives เหล่านี้จะปรากฏอยู่ใน complex sentence
Subordinate conjunctions Connectives ประเภทนี้ใช้นำ dependent adverb clauses และเชื่อม independent clauses
คำเหล่านี้ที่ใช้มาก ได้แก่ before, since, after, as, because, if, unless, until, although
เช่น Although Sompong works very hard, his boss seems to be displeased with his performance.

5.3 Prepositions
Prepositions คือคำที่ใช้แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง verbs กับ noun ซึ่งเป็น object ของ preposition นั้น และช่วยทำให้ความหมายของ verbs ที่ถูกเชื่อมเปลี่ยนไปจากเดิมได้ เช่น to, of, by, from, between, in, over, under, for
เช่น The cat is under the table.

6. Verbals
Verbals เป็นคำที่สร้างจาก verbs แต่ไม่มีฐานะเป็น verbs, verbals มี 3 ชนิดคือ infinitive, participle และ gerund

6.1 Infinitives (to go, to run, to see, etc.)
Infinitives ทำหน้าที่เหมือน noun, adjective หรือ adverb ได้
I like to dance. (noun)
A book to read is what the child wants. (adjective)
They went to play basketball. (adverb)

6.2 Participle
Participle มี 3 ชนิดคือ present participle (reading, printing, feeling, etc.), past participle (written, typed, built, etc.) และ perfect participle (having written, having typed, having built, etc.)
Participle ทำหน้าที่อย่างเดียวคือเป็น adjective เท่านั้น คือขยายคำนามที่เป็นประธานของประโยค
Going to the basement, John slipped. (adjective)
Typed and signed, the letter was mailed today. (adjective)
Having seen the accident, she called the police. (adjective)

6.3 Gerund (swimming, running breaking, etc.)
Gerund โดยทั่วไปทำหน้าที่เป็น noun
David enjoys playing games on the internet. (noun) ทำหน้าที่กรรมตามหลังคำกริยา enjoy

ตอนที 2
TENSES OF VERBS AND VERBALS

TENSES OF VERBS
Tense คือ จุดของเวลาหรือช่วงเวลาที่การกระทำหรือเหตุการณ์บางอย่างเกิดขึ้น ตามทัศนะของผู้พูดหรือผู้เขียน tense เป็นการบอกให้ทราบว่าการกระทำนั้น ๆ เกิดขึ้นเมื่อไร
ในภาษาอังกฤษมี 6 tenses แบ่งเป็น 3 simple tenses และ 3 compound tenses (perfect tense)
ทั้ง simple และ compound tenses ซึ่งรวมเป็น 6 tenses นั้น แต่ละ tense ก็มีรูป progressive form (continuous) ของมันเอง

ตัวอย่าง Tenses ทั้ง 6 Tenses:
3 Simple Tenses
Present : I cry. She cries.
Past : I cried. She cried.
Future : I shall cry. She will cry.

3 Compound (perfect) Tenses
Present Perfect : I have cried. She has cried.
Past Perfect : I had cried. She had cried.
Future Perfect : I shall have cried. She will have cried.

รูปแบบ progressive form ของทั้ง 6 tense มีลักษณะเหมือนกันอยู่อย่างหนึ่งคือ ประกอบด้วย present participle (verb + ing) และมี verb to be (is, was, will be, have been, etc.) อยู่ข้างหน้า ตัวอย่าง progressive form ของ tense ทั้ง 6 tenses:

3 Simple Tenses
Present : I am dancing. He is dancing.
Past : I was dancing. He was dancing.
Future : I shall be dancing. He will be dancing.

3 Compound (perfect) Tenses
Present Perfect : I have been dancing. He has been dancing.
Past Perfect : I had been dancing. He had been dancing.
Future Perfect : I shall have been dancing. He will have been dancing.

เฉพาะ present tense และ past tense ต่างก็มี emphatic form (การเน้นเพื่อให้
ความหมายของ verb มีน้ำหนักมากกว่าปกติ) โดยใช้ auxiliaries ได้แก่ do, does, หรือ did

ตัวอย่าง:
Present Tense : I do hate him. She does hate him.
Past Tense : I did hate him. She did hate him.
tenses หรือ verb tenses อาจประกอบด้วย verb ช่วย (auxiliary verbs) และตัว principal verbs รวมกัน หรือมีแต่กริยาหลัก (principal verbs) เท่านั้นก็ได้ ทั้งหมดนี้เรียกว่า principal parts ซึ่งหมายถึงลักษณะสำคัญที่เป็นรูปแบบของ verbs tense หนึ่ง ๆ เช่น:

Present Tense : allow, borrow
Past Tense : allowed, borrowed
Present Perfect Tense: have allowed, have borrowed

ประเภทของ verbs เมื่อจำแนกตามลักษณะของ principal parts แบ่งออกได้เป็น regular verb และ irregular verb
regular verbs คือ verbs ที่เมื่อเป็น past tense และ present perfect tense จะใช้วิธีเปลี่ยนรูป verbs โดยเติม ed เข้าที่ท้ายคำ infinitive เช่น :
talk – talked – have (has) talked
help – helped – have (has) helped

สำหรับ principal parts ของ irregular verbs ใช้วิธีเปลี่ยนรูปที่ตัว verbs นั่นเอง เช่น
catch – caught – have (has) caught
drink – drank – have (has) drunk

THE USE OF TENSES
1. Present tense
ใช้แสดงการกระทำหรือปรากฏการณ์ หรือภาวะที่เป็นอยู่ในขณะนั้น
I am a student of Chulalongkorn University.
I am trying to contact my father.
present tense อาจอยู่ในรูป emphatic present ซึ่งใช้ verb to do นำหน้า principal verb
ตัวอย่างการเปรียบเทียบ present กับ emphatic
present : I may work slowly, but I work accurately.
emphatic: I may work slowly, but I do work accurately.

ต่อไปนี้เป็นวัตถุประสงค์ของการใช้ present tense
(1) ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นปกติวิสัย หรือเป็นปกติธรรมดา โดยไม่คำนึงถึง tense ของ verb อื่นในประโยคเดียวกัน
Whenever he makes a mistake, he blames his brother.
I always eat in the canteen.

(2) ใช้แสดงความเป็นจริงที่ยอมรับกันทั่วไป ซึ่งอาจเป็นข้อเท็จจริงทางวิทยาศาสตร์ หรือทางประวัติศาสตร์ หรือวิทยาการอื่น ๆ หรือความจริงอันถาวร
Two and two are four.
The sun rises in the East.

(3) ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดในอดีตเพื่อเน้นให้เห็นเหตุการณ์นั้นเด่นชัด และมีชีวิตชีวาขึ้นเรียกว่า historical present (เป็นเรื่องเล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีต หรือเป็นความจริงเชิง
ประวัติศาสตร์ซึ่งจะต้องใช้ verb เป็น present)
The author describes (or described) the events leading him to his conclusion. He begins (or began) with….
In his fax of 14 February Mr. Johnson states (or stated) that he is (or was) unable to fill our order.

(4) ใช้แสดงถึงเหตุการณ์ในอนาคตได้โดย
(ก) มีส่วนขยายกำหนดเวลาไว้ด้วย
Tomorrow my teacher goes (หรือ will go) to Illinois.
She arrives (หรือ will arrive) on Saturday for a month’s visit.
(ข) เมื่ออยู่ใน dependent หรือ subordinate clause และตามหลัง connectives
เหล่านี้คือ : if, when, after, before, until, as soon as, etc.
As soon as he arrives, we shall begin our discussion.
He will not be able to complete his assignment until I give him necessary information.

2. Present perfect tense
(1) ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เพิ่งเสร็จสิ้นลงในปัจจุบัน
The Queen has just arrived at the ceremony.
(2) ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เริ่มมาจากอดีตและดำเนินต่อมาถึงปัจจุบัน
I have worked for this company for almost ten years.

3. Past tense
ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต ในห้วงเวลาหนึ่ง และเหตุการณ์นั้นได้เสร็จสิ้นลงแล้วในอดีตนั้น
I received your order this morning.
He left the office ten minutes ago.
past tense emphatic form จะมีรูปเหมือน present tense แต่ใช้ auxiliary did นำหน้า principal verb
ตัวอย่างเปรียบเทียบ past tense กับ emphatic
past tense : I gave her the folder, even though she said she couldn’t find it.
emphatic : I did give her the folder, even though she said she couldn’t find it.

4. Past perfect tense
ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตและเสร็จสิ้นไปก่อนอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง ซึ่งได้
เกิดขึ้นในอดีตเหมือนกัน เราจะใช้ tense นี้ ก็ต่อเมื่อมีเหตุการณ์ในอดีตสองเหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดต่างวาระกัน
He had finished his breakfast before I woke up.
ประโยคนี้มี 2 เหตุการณ์ คือ การที่เขารับประทานอาหารกับการที่ฉันตื่นนอน โดยที่การที่เขารับประทานอาหารเสร็จก่อน (จึงใช้ past perfect) การตื่นนอนของฉัน ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นทีหลัง (จึงใช้ past tense)
หรือ I had mailed the postcard when he called.

When I came back from lunch, she finished her report.
ประโยคนี้แสดงเหตุการณ์ 2 อย่าง ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดในระยะเวลาไล่เลี่ยกัน
จงเปรียบเทียบกับ When I cam back from lunch, she had finished her report.
การเขียนรายงานจบเกิดขึ้นก่อนการที่ฉันกลับมาจากการรับประทานอาหารกลางวัน

We discovered that a detective was following us.
เหตุการณ์ทั้ง 2 นี้เกิดขึ้นในเวลาเดียวกัน ในอดีต หรือในเวลาใกล้เคียงกัน
จงเปรียบเทียบกับ We discovered that a detective had been following us.
การติดตามของนักสืบได้เกิดขึ้นต่อเนื่องมาระยะหนึ่งอย่างไม่มีอะไรขัดจังหวะ และเรามารู้ตัวทีหลัง

5. Future tense
ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตหรือภาวะเงื่อนไขที่จะมีขึ้นในอนาคต
The Director will not be at the meeting on Friday.
(เป็น future simple tense)
He will be waiting for me in the lobby.
(เป็น future continuous tense)
6. Future perfect tense
ใช้แสดงถึงเหตุการณ์อนาคตที่ผู้พูดคาดว่าจะเสร็จสิ้นลงในระยะเวลาหนึ่ง (specific time) ในอนาคตนั้น
I will have worked with this firm for 15 years next Monday.
(เป็น future perfect tense)
I will have been working with this firm for 15 years next Monday.
(เป็น future perfect continuous tense)
ความแตกต่างของ will have worked กับ will have been working อยู่ที่ประการหลังเน้นความต่อเนื่องของสภาวการณ์โดยไม่มีอะไรมาทำให้ขาดช่วง (no interruptions)

ลำดับของ Tense หรือ Sequence of tense
Sequence of tense คือความสัมพันธ์เชิงเหตุผลเกี่ยวกับเวลา (time) ที่ใช้ในประโยค หรือในข้อความหนึ่ง ๆ กล่าวคือ เป็นการบอกให้ผู้อ่านทราบว่าเหตุการณ์ต่าง ๆ นั้นมีลำดับการเกิดก่อน – หลังอย่างไร

Tense of verbs in principal clauses

My new supervisor rushed into the office. He sat down at his desk and began to read the letters which the secretary had finished typing just a few minutes before. As he read, she crossed her fingers, hoping he would find no errors.

Tense of verbs in subordinate clauses
I hope he is in his office.
I hope he was in his office when you called.
I hope he will be in his office when we arrive.

(2) ถ้า verb ใน principal clause เป็น past หรือ past perfect, verbs ใน subordinate clauses จะต้องเป็น tense ใด tense หนึ่งที่เป็นอดีต
I thought that they were visiting you this week.
I thought that they had been visiting you all summer.
I thought that they had visited you the previous year.
ข้อยกเว้น: verb ใน principal clause จะเป็น tense ใดก็ตาม ถ้าข้อความใน subordinate clause เป็นความจริงที่ยอมรับกันทั่วไป (universal truth) verb ใน subordinate clause จะเป็น present tense เสมอ
He tells me that Bangkok is the capital of Thailand.
He told me that Bangkok is the capital of Thailand.
He didn’t believe that the world is round.

(3) ใน clauses of result or purpose (คือ clauses ที่นำด้วย conjunctions: in order that, so that)
(ก) ถ้า verb ใน principal clause เป็น past หรือ past perfect ให้ใช้ auxiliaries ที่เป็น past (might, could, would ใน subordinate clause)
He gave (หรือ had given) me a pass, so that I could enter the building on Saturdays.
(ข) ถ้า verb ใน principal clause เป็น present หรือ future tense ให้ใช้ auxiliaries ที่เป็น present (can, may) ใน subordinate clause
He will give me a pass, so that I can enter the building on Saturdays.

(4) ในกรณีที่เป็น indirect speech ถ้า verb ใน introductory clause (เช่น He said, She told me…) เป็น past หรือ past perfect, verb ที่เป็น present ในประโยค direct speech จะต้องเปลี่ยนเป็น past perfect
(original) : “I have sent a copy of the customer’s order no.128 for your consideration.”
(indirect speech): He said that he had sent a copy of the customer’s order no.128 for my consideration.

ถ้า verb ใน introductory clause เป็น present, verb ใน direct speech ไม่เปลี่ยน tense
(original) : I am sending a copy of our summer catalogue, together with the price list.
(indirect speech): He says he is sending a copy of his summer catalogue, together with the price list.

ถ้า verb ใน introductory clause เป็น past หรือ past perfect, verb ช่วย shall, will ในประโยค direct speech จะเปลี่ยนเป็น would (ไม่ใช้ should)
(original) : I shall send you a copy of our annual report tomorrow.
(indirect speech): He said that he would send me a copy of his/their annual report the following day.

TENSES OF VERBALS
แม้ verbals ซึ่งมีอยู่ 3 ชนิดคือ gerunds, participles, และ infinitives จะไม่ได้
ทำหน้าที่ในฐานะ verbs แท้ ๆ แต่ก็ยังมีคุณลักษณะบางประการเหมือน verbs ที่สำคัญที่สุดคือเรื่อง “tense”
participles มี 3 tenses แต่ gerunds และ infinitives มี 2 tenses
1. Gerunds
Gerund มี 2 tenses คือ present และ perfect
Present : talking, writing
Perfect : having talked, having written
(1) Writing letters is hard work.
(2) It is a treat to watch his swimming.
ข้อสังเกต: subject ของ gerund ควรจะอยู่ใน possessive case เสมอ โปรดดูประโยคข้างต้นและประโยคต่อ ๆ ไป
(3) The student’s writing won him first prize.
(4) We will appreciate your providing this information.
(5) Careful and courteous driving is a sign of a mature driver.
(6) He was honored for his having done such an outstanding job.
(7) Our not having arrived on time meant that we missed the beginning of the play.

2. Participles
participles มี 3 tenses คือ present, past, และ perfect
present participle : talking, writing
past participle : talked, written
perfect participle : having talked, having written

The girl talking on the telephone is my secretary.
The article, beautifully written, appeared in last week’s “Bangkok Post”.
The letter, having been typed and signed, was ready for mailing.

3. Infinitives
Infinitive มี 2 tenses คือ present และ perfect
present : to talk, to write
perfect : to have talked, to have written
To recognize and define the problem is our initial step.
He is supposed to have written those complaint letters.

4. Verbals in sentence fragments
Fragment : A sentence of 5 years in prison imposed upon five offenders arrested in connection with drug trade.
ควรแก้เป็น : A sentence of 5 years in prison was imposed upon five offenders arrested in connection with drug trade.
Fragment : Your fax of 4 March 2003, requesting information about the availability of some training materials and about the plans for distribution of these materials.
ควรแก้เป็น : Your fax of 4 March 2003, requested information about the availability of some training materials and about the plans for distribution of these materials.

TENSE SEQUENCE WITH VERBALS

1. Participles
ในที่นี้ participles เป็นเฉพาะ present และ perfect เพราะ past participle ตามปกติได้ใช้อยู่ใน perfect tenses ทั้งหลายแล้ว
Present participle ใช้แสดงการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นพร้อม ๆ กับการกระทำที่ปรากฏใน main verb ซึ่ง main verb นั้นอาจจะเป็น present หรือ past ก็ได้
Entering the office, he confirms his appointment.
Entering the office, he confirmed his appointment.
Perfect participle ใช้แสดงการกระทำที่เกิดก่อนและเสร็จสิ้นสมบูรณ์ การกระทำของ main verb
Having finished the repairs, the plumber is preparing to leave.
Having finished the repairs, the plumber was preparing to leave.

ต่อไปนี้เป็นตัวอย่างการใช้ present participle และ perfect participle ในแบบเปรียบเทียบกัน:
Being late for work, I ran up the stairs.
Having been late for work, I decided to stay and finish the report before 8 p.m.
(Being late เกิดพร้อม ๆ กับ ran up; แต่ Having been late เกิดก่อน decided to stay)
Intending to return immediately, I left the door open when I left out.
Having intended to return immediately, I was disappointed at having to be away so long.
(ประโยคแรก “การตั้งใจที่จะกลับเร็ว” กับ “การเปิดประตูทิ้งไว้” เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดพร้อม ๆ กัน, ส่วนประโยคที่สอง “การตั้งใจ…..” เกิดก่อน “การรู้สึกผิดหวังที่ต้องไปเสียนาน”)

2. Infinitives
Present infinitive ใช้ในความหมายที่ว่าเหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นพร้อมกับ main verb
I am trying to finish this article today.
I was trying to finish the article before the editor asked for it.
I shall try to finish the dissertation by the end of this month.
I am writing to request three copies of your latest publication.

Present infinitive ยังใช้แสดงอนาคตได้ แต่มักจะมีตัวประกอบเกี่ยวกับเวลา (time modifier)
อยู่ด้วย
I hope to attend the meeting next Friday.
He expected to arrive by today.
He had hoped to win the lottery.

Perfect infinitive ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ หรือการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน main verb
I am glad to have used your service.
I am honored to have known such a good speaker like you.

ข้อควรระวัง อย่าใช้ tense ประเภท perfect tense ร่วมไปกับ perfect infinitives ถึงแม้จะไม่ผิดไวยากรณ์ก็ตาม ขอแนะนำให้ใช้ present infinitives แทน เพราะมีความกระชับมากกว่า ดังใน
ตัวอย่าง:
จงอย่าใช้ : I should have liked to have seen her when she was in town.
จงใช้ : I should have liked to see her when she was in town.
จงอย่าใช้ : I had hoped to have shipped the order by now.
จงใช้ : I had hoped to ship the order by now.

3. Gerunds
present tense ของ gerund ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในปัจจุบัน
Taking a review course will help you solve your writing problems.

perfect tense ของ gerund ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดลงก่อนเหตุการณ์ของ main verb
He attributes his success to having studied hard for these two months before the entrance exam.

การจำแนกประเภทของ modifiers (Classification of modifiers)

(1) verbs to be
That student is shy. (the shy student)
The figures were accurate. (the accurate figures)
(2) verbs ที่ไม่ได้แสดงการกระทำ เช่น become, appear, seem, look
The town appeared deserted. (the deserted town)
The air seems humid. (the humid air)
The lady looked sad. (the sad lady)
(3) verbs ที่เกี่ยวกับผัสสะ (senses)
The reports sound exaggerated. (the exaggerated reports)
The apple tastes sweet. (the sweet apple)

หมายเหตุ ตามปกติเราใช้ adjectives ตามหลัง verb ที่เกี่ยวกับผัสสะ
แต่จะใช้ adverbs ตามหลังก็ได้ถ้าต้องการขยาย (modify) sense verbs นั้น เช่น:
The steak looks tender. (adjective)
The woman looked tenderly at the child. (adverb)
The child looks curious. (adjective)
The child looks curiously at the black box. (adverb)

COMPOUND MODIFIERS (WITH AND WITHOUT HYPHENS)

1. Modifiers ที่นำหน้าคำนาม
modifiers ที่ประกอบด้วยคำตั้งแต่ 2 คำขึ้นไป ซึ่งเป็น adjective เรียกว่า compound adjective และจะเชื่อมด้วย hyphen ( – ) เมื่ออยู่หน้า noun เช่น:
Have you an up-to-date report on that subject?
Please submit the above-mentioned Form in duplicate.
2. Modifiers ที่ตามหลังคำนาม
modifiers ที่ตามหลัง noun ไม่ใช้ hyphen ( – ) เชื่อมคำเว้นเสียแต่จะเป็น compound word ที่มี hyphen ( – ) อยู่แล้วใน dictionary
This report is up to date.
The Form mentioned above must be submitted in duplicate.
3. Suspending hyphens
บางกรณีต้องการเน้น compound word ที่ทำหน้าที่ adjective ให้มีน้ำหนัก และ compound word นั้น ประกอบด้วย adjectives 2 ตัว และมี noun ตัวเดียว กรณีเช่นนี้จะใส่ hyphen ( – ) ไว้หลัง adjectives ทั้ง 2 คำ เช่น:
Is he looking for a two-or three-bedroom apartment?
It is a 4-or 5-page report.
4. modifiers ที่แยกกันและใช้นำหน้าคำนาม
ถ้ามี adjectives 2 คำอยู่หน้า noun แต่ขยายความกันไปคนละลักษณะไม่ต้องใช้ hyphen โปรดสังเกตการใช้และไม่ใช้ comma คั่น
He wore a white flannel suit.
Give me a current statistical report.
It was a long, hard job.
5. Adverb ลงท้ายด้วย “ly” และใช้ร่วมกับ adjective
อย่าใช้ hyphen เชื่อมระหว่าง adverb ที่ลงท้ายด้วย ly กับ adjective หรือ participle
This is a carefully written research report.
That is a frequently quoted article.

COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

1. ระดับของการเปรียบเทียบ (Degrees of comparison)
ขั้น (หรือระดับ) ของการเปรียบเทียบทั้ง adjectives และ adverbs มี 3 ขั้น คือ:

Positive degree
คือ ขั้นที่บอกลักษณะหรือคุณภาพ โดยไม่มีการเปรียบเทียบว่าดีกว่า หรือเลวกว่า เช่น
high morale, a reliable worker, work fast, prepared carefully

Comparative degree
คือ ขั้นที่เปรียบเทียบว่า (ดี) กว่า หรือ (เลว) กว่า โดยการเติม er เข้าที่ modifier หรือเติม more หรือ less เข้าข้างหน้าคำที่มีสองพยางค์ขึ้นไป เช่น beautiful organized
Our organization has higher morale now than ever before.
He is a more dependable worker than she (is).

Superlative degree
คือ ขั้นที่เปรียบเทียบว่า (ดี) ที่สุด หรือ (เลว) ที่สุด โดยการเติม est เข้าที่ modifier หรือเติม most หรือ least เข้าข้างหน้าคำที่มีสองพยางค์ขึ้นไป
He is the most reliable worker in the office.
This is the most carefully prepared report I have ever read.

ในขั้นของการเปรียบเทียบนั้น Comparative degree เปรียบเทียบของเพียง 2 สิ่ง
เท่านั้น แต่ superlative degree เปรียบเทียบมากกว่า 2 สิ่งเสมอ
This book is the longer of the two. (มี the นำ longer ด้วย เพราะยาวที่สุดใน จำนวนเพียง 2 เล่ม)
This book is the longest of the three. (ปกติใช้ the นำหน้าการเปรียบเทียบขั้นสุด)

VERBALS AND VERBAL PHRASES AS MODIFIERS

verbals ได้แก่ infinitive, participle และ gerund เป็นคำที่สร้างจาก verbs อาจ
ทำหน้าที่เป็น modifiers ได้ในแบบคำโดด (single) หรือในแบบวลี (in phrases)
1. Infinitive
Infinitive ในฐานะ modifier อาจเป็น adjective หรือ adverb ได้
เป็น adjective:
On a plane trip, I always carry a pocket book to read.
เป็น adverb:
I am ready to listen to the song now.
(modify adjective ‘ready’)

2. Infinitive phrase
To get the most out of this course, you must study regularly.
To complete the research on time, every student should start collecting necessary data now.

3. Participle
participle ทั้ง 3 รูป (present, past, perfect) เป็น adjective present participle: คือ (non-finite) verbs ที่ลงท้ายด้วย ing เช่น talking, building, writing
past participle : คือ (non-finite) verbs ที่ลงท้ายด้วย ed หรือ t หรือเปลี่ยนสระ เช่น talked, built, written
perfect participle : คือ (non-finite) verbs ที่ประกอบด้วย having หรือ having been ตามด้วย past participle เช่น having talked, having built, having written, having been written
Rising, the director greeted his special guests.
The letter, typed and signed, was mailed yesterday.
หรือ Typed and signed, the letter was mailed yesterday.
The letter, having been corrected, was ready for the Director’s signature.
หรือ Having been corrected, the letter was ready for the Director’s signature.

4. Participial phrase
participial phrase ทำหน้าที่เป็น adjective
Leaving her desk, the typist turned off her computer.
The draft, typed hurriedly, was passed around among the members.
หรือ Being typed hurriedly
Typed hurriedly

5. Gerund phrase
gerund phrase โดยทั่วไปมีฐานะเหมือน gerund คือ เป็น noun แต่ถ้าเป็น object ของ preposition แล้ว gerund phrase นั้น จะทำหน้าที่เป็น adjective หรือ adverb
After meeting with the representatives of the Trade Union, he announced his decision.
He ended his report by summarizing his conclusions and presenting some recommendations.

6. Dangling verbal phrases

(1) Dangling : To get the most out of this course, regular attendance is necessary.
แก้ไขเป็น: To get the most out of this course, you must attend class regularly.
(2) Dangling : To apply for this job, Form 57 must be completed.
แก้ไขเป็น: To apply for this job, the applicant must complete Form 57.
หรือ
When the applicant applies for this job, Form 57 must be completed.

DEPENDENT CLAUSES AS MODIFIERS

dependent clauses อาจทำหน้าที่เป็น adjective หรือ adverb ได้
1. Dependent clauses as adjectives (adjective clauses)
dependent clauses ทำหน้าที่เป็น adjectives นั้นอาจนำหน้าด้วย relative pronouns (คือ that, which, who, whom, whatever, whichever, whoever, whomever) หรือ relative adverbs (คือ where, when, while)
ที่นำหน้าด้วย relative pronouns:
The other letter that you wrote yesterday has been revised.
The woman who called for an appointment is very attractive.
ที่นำหน้าด้วย relative adverbs:
This is the building where our office is located.
We caught him at a time when he was not busy.

adjective clauses ยังแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ชนิด คือ ชนิดที่เป็นความหมายสำคัญของประโยค (defining หรือ restrictive clauses) และชนิดที่ไม่เป็นความหมายสำคัญของประโยค (non-defining หรือ nonrestrictive clauses)
adjective clauses ชนิด defining ไม่ใช้ commas คั่น ส่วนชนิด non-defining ใช้ commas คั่นเสมอ
ตัวอย่าง:
The girl who is sitting at the front desk is his secretary. (defining clause)
Miss Steinbeck, who is busy typing letters, is his secretary. (non-defining clause)

2. Dependent clauses as adverbs (adverbial clauses)
dependent clauses ทำหน้าที่ adverbs จะใช้ subordinating conjunctions
นำหน้า เช่น as, because, since, although, if, provided, after, while
While he was editing her essay, he noticed several grammatical errors.
Before he signed the letter, he added some more important information.
