Writing 1 (examples paragraph; 20 points, 1 hour): You will be given topics from which you will choose one to develop into a paragraph. It is useful to take a few minutes before writing to formulate a clear, focused, and engaging topic sentence to begin your paragraph, and outline/organize vivid examples to illustrate and support that topic sentence. Review the basics of paragraph writing and guide to the illustration (example) paragraph in your supplement packet (pp. 1–22 of the Paragraph Writing section) and practice with the exercises provided there. During the test, you may consult dictionaries and thesari but take care to budget your time well. Also, here are additional tips and examples culled from your own in-class writing and from past students' work.

"The Chaos" Recitation
In groups of three, make an appointment with me for a Monday lunch reading of "The Chaos" poem. Divide the reading equally among you, and help each other out in looking up words, figuring out the pronunciations and in practicing reading aloud. It is okay to print out a copy to look at while reciting.

*Soup Sketch Ending due: Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, in a short skit on their show A Bit of Fry and Laurie, have invited you to write the ending to a ridiculous scenario in a restaurant. In groups of three students, one of a different character trait (assertive, domineering, and aggressive), finish the skit that Fry and Laurie have started. How do you think the scene should end? Be careful not to watch the video clip beyond the invitation where they will act out the ending that a listener has just phoned in. You can read the first part of the script here.
