! Final Exam: The final is on Monday, December 3, 1–4 p.m. (BRK 301 for sections 1, 3 and 5 and BRK 304 for sections 2, 4 and 6). It has three parts: the first includes scanning, paraphrasing, and indicating rhyme scheme on an unseen poem, the second on poems in the second half of the semester, and the third on the novel Kindred. The last two each consists of a prompt which require you to write an essay on the respective works we have read.

Requirements and Expectations

• Reading Responses: Aside from occasional writing of other kinds, reading responses are useful exercises that attempt to explain, discuss or comment on a question that you pose about the reading. No more than one page double-spaced is expected per response but it should be well thought out. See samples.

• Attendance and Participation: Discussion of the texts will be a big part of this class and students are encouraged to express their opinions, share observations and ask questions. Come prepared to discuss the reading material.

• Assignments include three reading responses, two tests, a final exam, and a group presentation.
