Announcements
! Reading Responses: Your best three reading responses will count toward the final grade. You may use any of the writing exercises, practice tests, and study guide page questions as prompts for them or bring up an issue of your own and discuss it. Use MLA format. The due date is Friday, May 10 at midnight. If you have written hard copies of in-class exercises, you don't need to retype them. These, as well as print outs (if you prefer, instead of e-mail attachments), can be submitted to your folder just inside the door of my office. Folders are identified by student ID number.

! Continued Q&A: Discussion need not end after class time or presentation week. You are welcome to post questions and answers to our reading online. I'll be setting up blog posts for many of our syllabus readings on Roundtable Conversation. Meanwhile, you can e-mail me questions that you didn't get to ask and/or answers that you didn't have the chance to give. Once the discussion pages are up, I'll upload your Q&A to them.

Detailed Schedule

Requirements and Expectations

  • Reading Responses: Aside from occasional writing of other kinds, reading responses are useful exercises that attempt to explain, discuss or comment on a question that you pose about the reading. No more than one page double-spaced is expected per response but it should be well thought out. See samples. You may write as many as you wish and the best three responses will count toward your final grade.

  • Attendance and Participation: Discussion of the texts will be a big part of this class and students are encouraged to express their opinions, share observations and ask questions. Come prepared to discuss the reading material.

  • There will be four quizzes (on unseen texts) two tests, a final exam, a final presentation, and a 35-page final paper.
