Translation 1: Grammar-Translation Method

เปี๊ยกเผชิญหน้าเกรียง ไม่ยอมยกมือไหว้นายเกริกพ่อของมัน 

Piak faced Kriang, not putting up his hands to wai that man's father.

ฝ่ายนั้นหลบตาวูบ เขาได้ยินเสียงพ่อของเกรียงพูดว่า

Kriang quickly lowered his eyes. Piak heard Kriang's father say,

“ไอ้ตัวดีมาแล้ว …ไอ้เปี๊ยก…เอ็งต่อยลูกกูทำไม” 

"Here's the big shot...Piak...why'd you fuckin' hit my son?"

 
พ่อเกรียงชิงถามก่อนที่อีกฝ่ายจะตั้งตัว

Kriang's father asked before the other could be on guard.

“ดู สิ…ลูกฉันหน้าเขียว…ปากเจ่อไปหมด

"Look at 'im...my son's face is black and blue...mouth all swollen.

ฉันต้องพาไปหาหมอนะพี่เสียงเพราะเกรียงมันเป็นไข้

I had to take him to the doctor, Siang, because Kriang had a fever.

 
ลูกชายพี่ทำเกินไป ไม่เห็นแก่หน้าฉันบ้างเลย”

Your son overdid it. He had no consideration of me."

เปี๊ยกนั่งลง สายตาแม่จ้องเขม็ง  เขาอยากร้องไห้เมื่อมองหน้าแม่

Piak sat down. Ma's eyes fixed on him. He wanted to cry when he looked at her face,

ไม่ใช่เป็นเพราะกลัวโทษทันฑ์ที่จะได้รับหรืออะไร  แต่เพราะเขาเห็นริ้วรอยความเหน็ดเหนื่อยบนดวงหน้านั้น

not because he feared the punishment he would get or anything, but because he saw lines of weariness on that face.

แม่ทำงานหนักหาเงินตัวเป็นเกลียวเพื่อลูก  แล้วยังต้องมาเดือดร้อนใจเพราะเขา

Mom worked hard to earn money like a slave for her son, and she has to be troubled because of him.

“แม่…” เปี๊ยกเปล่งเสียงออกมาได้คำเดียวก็รู้สึกมีก้อนมาจุกคอ

"Mom..." Piak was able to utter that one word, then felt a lump block his throat.

“แม่ขอถามคำเดียวเปี๊ยก…แกต่อยเกรียงเขาหรือเปล่า”

"I would like to ask one word, Piak...Did ya hit Kriang?"

เขาอยากให้แม่ถามหลายคำ เขาจะได้อธิบายว่าทำไมถึงต้องทำเช่นนั้น

He wanted mom to ask many words, so he could explain why he did what he did.

คนอย่างเกรียงมันไม่บริสุทธิ์ผุดผ่องอย่างที่ทุกคนคิด

Someone like Kriang was not pure and innocent like everybody thought.

“ทำไมไม่ตอบแม่เขาล่ะไอ้เปี๊ยก กล้าทำต้องกล้ารับอย่างลูกผู้ชายสิวะ 

"Why don't you answer your mother, Piak. If you dared to do it, you gotta dare to admit it like a man.

ลูกกูทำอะไรให้มึงถึงต้องรุนแรงถึงขั้นต้องต่อยต้องตี

What did my son do to you that you gotta get violent to the point of beating people up?

เขากลับค่อย ๆ เหมือนแสงสว่างสำหรับเธอในดินแดนประหลาดแห่งนี้

he turned out to have become like a light for her in this strange land

ดีนะที่กูมาให้แม่มึงจัดการไม่งั้นกูไปบอกครูใหญ่  มึงต้องถูกไล่ออกจากโรงเรียนแน่”

It's a good thing that I came over to have your mother handle things. If I'd told the head teacher, you would be kicked out of the school for sure."

Translation 2: Sample for Discussion

Piak confronted Kriang, refusing to show any respect for his father, Krirk. Kriang looked away, avoiding his eyes. Piak heard the father say,

“You bastard. Here you are. Why did you strike my son?” Kriang’s father asked before Piak while Piak was off his guard.

“Look! His face is all bruised and his mouth has swollen up. I had to take him to the doctor’s because he had a temperature. Your son was way out of line. He could have let Kriang off for my sake.”

Piak sat down. His mother was staring at him. He felt like crying, as he was looking at his mother’s face. it was not because he feared the punishment he was going to get or anything like that, but rather because he saw traces of exhaustion on that face. Mother had been slaving away for his sake and yet he gave her trouble.

“Mother…,” Piak just managed to utter a single word before he felt a lump in his throat.

“I’m going to ask you one question, Piak. Did you punch Kriang?”

Piak wished that his mother had asked some more questions so that he could explain why he had done what he did. Kriang was not pure and innocent as everyone thought.

“Why don’t you answer your mother, Piak? You ought to confess to what you’ve done like a man. What did my son do to you that you had to get so violent. You’re lucky I asked your mother to handle things. Otherwise, I would have gone to the principal and you would have been expelled,” the father threatened like someone in control of the situation.

Translation 3: Sample for Discussion

Piak faced off Kriang, refusing his father Krerk a wai. That boy looked away quickly, and he heard the father say, “Ace has finally showed…Piak…why’d you hit my son?” The man began before the other could settle.

“Look at that…My son’s face is black and blue…mouth all busted. Siang, I had to take him to the hospital because he ran a fever. Your son went overboard. This insults me, you know?”

Piak sat down. Ma’s eyes bored into him. He wanted to cry at her expression, not because he feared punishment or anything, but because he saw worn lines there. She’d worked herself to the bone to earn money for him and now gets trouble because of him.

“Ma…” Piak let out one word and felt a lump block his throat.

“I have one question, Piak…Did you punch him?”

He wanted her to ask several questions so he could explain why he did it. A person like Kriang wasn’t all squeaky clean like people thought.

“Why don’t you answer her, Piak? You do it, you damn admit it like a man. What did my son do to you that you had to beat him up for it? Good thing I’m bringing this to your ma. If I’d taken it to the principal, you’d be fuckin’ kicked out,” the father threatened as one who held the upper hand.
