1: Sample for Discussion Thailand is located in the center of the Southeast Asian region. With an area about the size of France, it is the fiftieth largest country in the world. The capital and the most densely populated city of Thailand is Bangkok. The latest consensus by the National Statistics Bureau lists Thai population at around 65 million. In the past, the official name of Thailand was "Siam" but in 1939 it was changed to "Thailand." The word "Tai" is actually the name of an ethnic group from the central plains, not the word that means liberty as is widely believed. However, although the name of the country has nothing to do with freedom, in its 800-year long history, it is the only nation in Southeast Asia that was not colonized by a Western power. |
