At 6.30 a.m. on November 27, police at the Chaiprakarn Provincial Police Station, Chiang Mai joined forces with soldiers in setting up a checkpoint in the area of Phahong, Chiang Mai, after having been tipped off about illegal drugs being smuggled through the area for delivery to a network in the city of Chiang Mai.

While authorities were manning the checkpoint, they spotted a green Toyota pick-up, with the Chiang Mai registration number Phor Bor 4015, coming along the Chiang Mai-Phang Road at high speed, and heading for the city of Chiang Mai. They signalled the pick-up to stop and searched inside the vehicle. The driver was identified as Ake Thanomwittaya, 28, and a passenger as Duangchan Thanomwittaya, 25. The two were Hmong brothers and looked suspicious, so they were asked to get out of the pick-up. Authorities searched inside the pick-up and found nothing illegal. However, when they examined the body of the vehicle thoroughly, they found that the compartment under the pick-up had been modified. They opened the compartment and found 500,000 speed pills hidden inside. The drugs were confiscated.

Initially, the two men confessed that it was the second time they had been hired to transport drugs. The first time was about two months ago when they were paid for 100,000 baht for smuggling speed pills. This time, they arranged to collect the drugs at an appointed place in Ban Tha Magang in Thatorn Sub-district in order to hand them over in Pitsanulok to people who would carry them to the Thai Market in Bangkok. They would get 200,000 baht after the job was done.

Police will investigate to identify the persons who hired them to smuggle the drugs as well as the entire network so that they can be brought to justice.
