Bringing up children is probably the most difficult task that any of us will ever do, yet society offers less preparation for it than for any other tasks. Even sex education deals more with preventing pregnancy than preparing young people to become parents. Many people say that child-rearing is, and should be, a private matter, but surely even they must accept that teaching young people about the seriousness of being parents is a public responsibility. Some people maintain that no preparation for parenthood is necessary because the whole process of bearing and rearing children is instinctive. I have more sympathy with the people who say that whether preparation is desirable or not, it is actually impossible because we can't really imagine what being a parent is like until we become one.
