Announcements
! Holiday Reading: This semester break's holiday reading is Valentine Grey by Sandi Toksvig. (Special reminder for sections 1 and 10: acharn Michael Crabtree and acharn Jennifer Goodman would like you to read Valentine Grey as well.) You can acquire the book on your own or order a copy from the MCS shop (khun Dao's shop under the stairs of Maha Chakri Sirindorn Building). Ask the staff there for the book acharn Puckpan assigned for English I semester break. Enjoy reading and happy holidays! More details about this semester's extraordinary holiday reading here.

! Tests Return: Section 9, I will be returning your writing 2 by e-mail, and will post reading test 2 marks identified by student ID online, linked to from this announcement page. Some writing observations:
  • Many of you tend to write your topic sentences like a narrative. Your first sentence reads more like the beginning of a story rather than a statement that sets up your controlling idea and the set of examples that will illustrate a point that you are trying to make about the topic. Compare the following first sentences. Do you see the difference? Review the explanations and examples in the writing packet on this.
    • When I have problems, I go to my best friend for advice. [student sentence]
    • Living in a dormitory brings a number of benefits to university students. [example topic sentence in the packet; p. 9]
  • Some explicatory sentences that follow your examples are still vague and general. If you have this problem, think more specifically about what you are trying to illustrate with your example, and show in a detailed way how the example illustrates that point you are trying to convey. It's okay to give further vivid examples to illustrate your main/categorical examples.
