Writing 1 (examples paragraph; 20 points, 1 hour): You will be given topics from which you will choose one to develop into a coherent paragraph. It is useful to take a few minutes before writing to formulate a clear, focused, and engaging topic sentence to begin your paragraph, and outline/organize vivid examples to illustrate and support that topic sentence, using appropriate transitional expressions. No electronic dictionaries are allowed but you may bring a paper dictionary to use while writing.

Living Library: Students review living/human library information and book examples posted for the September 6 class on our detailed schedule and decide on a subject and title for yourself as a living book. Think about topics you embody that "challenge stigma, stereotypes and prejudices," which is an objective of the living library. Take a bit of time to self-explore. What experiences have you had that classmates can learn from? What have many people misunderstood about you? What criticisms have you heard about you or about people like you? What stories can you tell classmate readers that will help clarify their misconceptions about and change their attitude toward the kind of person you are, the kind of history/background that you have, or the kind of culture/subculture/group that you would like to represent? Bring the paper with the subject and title of you to class.

Alternative Home: Design a non-traditional dream home. Draw it on the paper given to you in today's class. Write detailed descriptive annotations to your drawing to explain its features, functions, and environment. Practice using sensory evocative words (p. 34), noun phrase constructions (p. 33) , and relative clauses (p. 36) to inform your reader about the shape, type and design of your concept home and to describe its location, special characteristics, decoration, objects or furniture, size, view, and symbolic or personal meaning. Bring your annotated drawing to Oct. 2 class.

Final Exam (8:30–11:30 a.m.) There are four parts to the final: vocabulary (Vocabulary + Vocabulary Plus + Vocabulary Bank), grammar (ex. relative clauses, introductory it, the perfect aspect, modal verbs and related phrases, the passive construction and use), reading, and writing.
