Unit 2: Opinion: Changing Your Mind Reading
Writing 1 (examples paragraph; 20
points, 1 hour): You will be given topics from
which you will choose one to develop into a
coherent paragraph. It is useful to take a few
minutes before writing to formulate a clear,
focused, and engaging topic sentence to begin
your paragraph, and outline/organize vivid
examples to illustrate and support that topic
sentence, using appropriate transitional
expressions. No electronic dictionaries are
allowed but you may bring a paper dictionary
to use while writing.

Unit 2: Opinion: Changing Your Mind Reading
Discussion: context clues;
collocations; stereotypes, prejudice; communicating
opinions
Living Library: Students review
living/human library information and book examples posted
for the September 6 class on our detailed schedule and decide on a
subject and title for yourself as a living book. Think
about topics you embody that "challenge stigma,
stereotypes and prejudices," which is an objective of the
living library. Take a bit of time to self-explore. What
experiences have you had that classmates can learn from?
What have many people misunderstood about you? What
criticisms have you heard about you or about people like
you? What stories can you tell classmate readers that will
help clarify their misconceptions about and change their
attitude toward the kind of person you are, the kind of
history/background that you have, or the kind of
culture/subculture/group that you would like to represent?
Bring the paper with the subject and title of you to
class.
