Final Exam on Mar. 3
: (8:30–11:30 a.m.) There will be five parts, corresponding to each of the five translation types in our five tests. Dictionaries (electronic or paper) are not allowed in the exam room. Review files from your classmates are linked to in the topics below.

Section 7 Feb. 26 Class
: For Wednesday, February 26 class, you will be giving a two-minute crash-review for your classmates on a translation topic (listed below). Make use of the concordance function in the software program AntConc, downloadable from Laurence Anthony's Website, in making helpful observations/reminders about language use on your chosen topic. Note that files must be saved as .txt in order to be used in the program's concordance display. Those choosing the informative and expressive texts option need to use your evaluative skills to choose a good text source. If you want authoritative information about bamboo, where would you go? If you want interesting fictional pieces from good writers, how do you find it?

Section 7 Feb. 3 Class
: For Monday, February 3, please translate expressive text exercises #2 (The Joy Luck Club) and #3 ("The Chaser"). Also, prepare for test 4. Below are some practice passages.
 
! Long Distance Learning for Section 7 Jan. 13 and Jan. 15 Class: Chula has announced suspension of classes Jan. 13–15. There will be no class in BRK 312 on Monday and Wednesday, January 13 and 15, 2014, but you will be handing in your informative text Thai-English translation exercises #1–5 as well as คิดถึงครู by e-mail. I will be posting discussion for the exercises Tuesday (#2–4) and Thursday (#5) morning. So, you should send me your translations before then. Your Thai-English translation of an excerpt of your choice from คิดถึงครู is due on or before Monday, January 27. Test 4, scheduled for that same day right after University Games, will be postposed till further notice.

Long Distance Learning for Section 7 Dec. 9 Class
: Thanks for your news exercises 1–4 translation. Though Chula has announced normal operations for Monday, December 9, 2013, I anticipate that many of you may have difficulty getting to and back from campus since people will be marching the streets throughout the day. I will ask that for our section, you work from home instead of trying to come to our classroom on Monday. Please finish translating all the T-E news exercises (to #6) and
e-mail them to me. I'll be posting discussion for all Thai-English news exercises by the end of Monday, so you should get your translations to me before then. If you have questions about any of the news articles, please don't hesitate to write.

Class Cancelled on Monday and Wednesday
: Chulalongkorn University has announced that campus will be closed Monday, December 2–Wednesday, December 4, 2013. There will be no classes this week. Students in section 7 can e-mail me your news (Thai-English) exercises 1–4 translation.

Section 7 Nov. 18 Class
: Section 7 students, don't forget to translate news (English-Thai) exercises #5 and #6 for Monday. We will be discussing them along with #4 and the six Thai amnesty bill news stories (3 in English and 3 in Thai) that you sent me from last week.

Section 7 Nov. 13 Class Canceled
: There will be no class on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 for students in Introduction to Translation section 7. E-mail me your English-Thai news exercise #4 (drug smuggling) translation and then you are free to think about your role in this moment of Thai history and to contribute. Our learning is outside the classroom on Wednesday. Notice as well English v. Thai news articles covering the unfolding events in our country this week on the language issues we have discussed and any other you discover. E-mail me at least three news stories in each language (or their links) over the weekend along with your observations regarding their language, grammar, convention, structure, etc. We'll examine this mini corpus we've collected in comparison and conjunction with other news on our syllabus. Have fun designing your learning experience for one hour and studying from real world events outside the classroom!

I'll be posting discussion for news exercise #3 and #4 later today and uploading the detailed schedule soon after. If you have questions, don't hesitate to write.

 
! Supplementary Article: Don't forget to pick up acharn Amara's supplementary article (7 baht) after class on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 in front of the student elevator, BRK 3rd floor. If you missed getting the article, don't worry. It is available for purchase from the staff at the Department of English Office (BRK 1110).
